Don’t take it lying down: How intimate wellness and vaginal health are the new hot topics

With COVID still in full force, now more than ever we are thinking about our health— our immune systems, what foods we put in our bodies and what’s in our cosmetics, which is understandable. The data about the benefits of pesticide-free and organic food are more widely known and spoken about than they have ever been and this information is getting out to the masses and it’s about time.

Concern over cosmetic and body care products too are following in the same vein. For example, while the skin is a great protective barrier, it can absorb up to 60% of the lipophilic (that’s the oil-soluble) components in our skin-care products. That’s quite a thought, isn’t it?

Even more concerning for those of us using feminine hygiene and sexual wellness products is that our vaginal mucosa, which is highly permeable, is absorbing an even higher percentage of the chemicals it comes into contact with. This is because vagina’s mucosa has less keratin than epithelial skin cells, making it easier for certain substances to pass through.
There are a range of chemicals thought to be endocrine disruptors in many commercial products which could easily cause concern but let’s not get ahead of ourselves and worry too much. We live in an amazing time where research and knowledge bring new disruptive brands with products that have been made with the conscious consumer in mind.

Let’s, take intimate lubricant for example— traditionally lubes have been made with ingredients known for their slippery nature and profitable price-point rather than chosen for their benefit to the body.
Newer brands such as Good Clean Love, Sustain and Into the Wylde are championing women’s vaginal health by creating effective products that are not only free from unpleasant chemicals but are even organic and in some cases vegan.

Taking a stand around our intimate health is so important because if we don’t talk about it, it’s the one thing that gets overlooked and when you think about the physiology involved it’s the one thing we can’t afford to neglect.
Something about the word vagina makes people uncomfortable but that’s because it’s a subject which has been made taboo for centuries. I’d like to think we can turn that around so we can feel like we own the language used to describe our bodies, that we can fully sit in and own our power by demanding products that really do have our best interests at heart.

Kathie Bishop MNIMH, is the founder of Into the Wylde, a natural intimate lubricant brand that is registered with the Vegan Society and The Soil Association. She also runs the clinic The Wylde Herbalist, where she helps women with their vaginal health. She firmly believes that lube is for every woman, not just around and beyond menopause, and that everything is better with lube!
