Featured Brands: Terra Luna Beauty

Terra Luna Beauty is a little over 2 years old and making head way in the beauty industry. Nominated in three categories at this years Indie Beauty Expo New York this brand's simplistic take on the skin care routine, eco-conscious ingredients and philanthropic spirit (a portion of all profits are donated to animal rescues) are what makes Terra Luna a brand to watch in 2018.  Learn more in our interview with founder Sara Khan.

Hi Sara! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

Hi! I’m a 23-year-old Pisces vegetarian, and I am the founder of Terra Luna Beauty.

Can you tell us a little bit about how Terra Luna was formed?

Terra Luna Beauty was born in my college apartment. At the time, I was struggling with my own cystic acne and hyperpigmentation. I found myself torn between caustic pharmaceuticals and organic snake oil. I wanted a personal care brand that shared my ethics, aesthetic, and was malleable to my ever-changing schedule. When my humble creations started to show results, I began selling them to my friends, and then their friends, and then I opened an Etsy shop for a short while before launching my own site.

What’s the concept behind the line?

Our mission is to create modern and mindful personal care products. We strive to bring simplicity back to skincare by designing multi-purpose products for all genders, ages, and skin types.

Can you share more about how the products are made?

All of our products are handmade in small-batches with the freshest possible ingredients. All of our ingredients are cruelty-free, vegan, and fair-trade. We don’t use any crazy parabens or preservatives, so most of our products are made to order.

How did you first become interested in skincare?

My passion, as well as most of my knowledge, for skincare came from my Bangladeshi roots. In Southeast Asian cultures there is a huge emphasis on keeping your skin and hair healthy with natural remedies. Growing up, my mom and grandma would constantly run olive oil through my hair and create facials out of chickpea flour, which I absolutely hated as a kid. But it became something I really appreciated as an adult, as I was searching for effective and non-toxic skincare.

Where did the name of the brand come from?

Honestly, ‘Terra Luna Beauty’ was something I threw together when people started asking to buy my products and I realized I that I needed a brand name. I wanted something that alluded to balance in nature, as that was the foundation of my formulations. Some days I think I chose the perfect name, and some days it sounds a little cheesy.

How do you figure out what ingredients are going to combine properly for each product?

As I mentioned before, all of our products are created to be multi-purpose. I try to start with a product skeleton (cleanser, exfoliant, bath soak) and add ingredients that will balance out any shortcomings that are typically associated with said product, to bring it new life. Our Solstice Cleansing Oil is the perfect example. I wanted to create an oil cleanser that would remove stubborn dirt and makeup, while also being safe to leave on as a moisturizer. I chose non-comedogenic oils with an equal ratio of oleic and linoleic acids, so that it was suitable for all skin types. It’s all just a balancing act!

What's your morning skincare routine like?

My morning skincare routine is pretty erratic. For some reason, my mornings are when I like to experiment with new products, trends, and formulations. I’ve become somewhat of a skincare hoarder, but it’s all in the name of inspiration! Or at least that’s what I tell myself.

What about your skincare routine at night?

My nighttime skincare routine is more finite. I double cleanse with Solstice, followed by Nectar, and finish with a touch of eye cream.

Mixing the Solstice Cleansing Oil and Mud Brightening Facial Polish isn’t suggested on the label but we like to mix the two and follow up with the Nectar Foaming Cleanser.  Is this acceptable or should we be stopped?

YES! YES! YES! I live to hear about how people customize our products to fit their routines. Our entire collection is designed to be adaptable to your unique skincare needs. I love it when people break the mold and start getting creative with it.

If someone is new to your line, what products do you recommend they start with?

If you are new to our line, or skincare in general, I recommend that you start with Nectar for the face, Espresso Scrub for the body, and Moon for the mind.

Any favorite DIY beauty recipes you like to use?

Fall has me feeling the dark lip colors, so I’ve been dependent on DIY lip scrubs. I mix equal parts of coconut oil and sugar, with just a dash of vegetable glycerin.

What is next for Terra Luna?

We have some exciting new products slated to launch in 2018. First off is a cream moisturizer. It’s been the most requested product and I’ve been playing with different recipes for a while. The other is a recovery mask, because we could all use a little saving now and then.
